Liposuction, sometimes referred to as “lipo” by patients, is a type of fat removal procedure used in plastic surgery that removes localized collections of fat from various parts of the body, such as the hips, abdomen, back and arms. When suctioning the fat, the skin molds itself to the new contours of the treated area where the excess fat has been removed. If your skin has good elasticity and collagen, the skin is likely to appear smooth and tight. If your skin has poor elasticity, the skin in the treated areas will appear loose. Women or men who have significant loose skin and stretch marks may be a better candidate for a tummy tuck or maybe a combination of both lipo and a tummy tuck.

What Are The Benefits of Liposuction?
There are many benefits to having liposuction such as:
Liposuction permanently removes fat cells. Once fat cells are removed they will not grow back. This does not mean that fat won’t grow in other areas of your body, so it’s important after liposuction to maintain a healthy lifestyle to maintain your weight so you don’t gain weight in other areas.
Minimal scarring. With liposuction, only small incisions are made so patients walk away with having little to no scarring once the incisions heal.

Liposuction cannot remove cellulite, stretch marks or excess skin. Good candidates for liposuction are:
- Within 30% of their ideal weight
- Have firm, elastic skin
- Non-smokers
- Nonsurgical management like diet and exercise hasn’t worked

What Should You Expect
The Steps of a Liposuction Procedure
Step 1 – Anesthesia
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include local anesthesia, intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.
Step 2 – The incision
Liposuction is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions.
A cannula (thin hollow tube) is inserted through the incisions to loosen excess fat. This is done through a back and forth motion. After the fat has been dislodged, it is suctioned out of the body by using a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula.
Step 3 – The results
Your improved body contour will be apparent once the swelling and fluid retention commonly experienced following liposuction subside.
Recovery After Your Fat Removal Procedure
You should expect to go home after the procedure, so make sure you have someone to drive you home afterward. After liposuction surgery, bruising, swelling and soreness is common for at least a few weeks.
You may be required to wear a compression garment for 1 to 2 months after surgery to control swelling. Antibiotics are also administered to prevent infection. You can start walking immediately after the procedure, and most patients return to work within a few days and get back to normal activities 2 weeks after the procedure, but every person is different, so these time frames will vary for each patient.
Additionally, small drains may be placed in the surgical incisions to remove any excess fluid or blood. These are usually removed around five to ten days after the operation. Your improved body contour will be apparent when the swelling and fluid retention from the liposuction procedure subside.
