JOB SUMMARY:     Responsible for supervision and coordination of the activities of the bacteriology department.  Perform bacteriology and parasitology testing in accordance with New York State Department of Health regulations.  Performs related work in immunology as required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Organizes, assigns, directs, and supervises subordinate personnel in performing bacteriology and parasitology procedures.  Isolates, cultures, identifies and when required, performs sensitivity testing on microorganisms or parasites.  Makes serologic/immunologic and microscopic examinations of tissue and fluid samples to identify pathogenic organisms.  Prepares and submits reports on results of tests.  Maintains NYS bacteriology and parasitology permit in accordance with NYS DOH guidelines.  Performs NYS proficiency testing in bacteriology and parasitology.  Monitors daily quality control and records data.  Responsible for proper start-up and calibration of bacteriology instrumentation and incubators.  Reviews and updates bacteriology and parasitology procedures.  Performs additional proficiency surveys as required.  Responsible for inventory and requisition of supplies.  Performs related work as required.  May be exposed to hazardous drugs.  Attends OSHA training upon initial employee orientation and annually completes an OSHA competency.

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS: Direct relationship with patients, staff, physicians and administration.  Must maintain a courteous and effective working relationship with patients, staff, physicians and administration.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE:    B.S. degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology or a related science or qualify as a Medical Technologist pursuant to the provisions of section 58-1.5(b) of Part 58 of 10NYCRR.  Through knowledge of the theory and practices of microbiology and parasitology.  Thorough knowledge of techniques required for performance of bacteriology, parasitology, and immunologic tests and skills in the use of laboratory equipment.  New York State Regulations state must have 6 years of microbiology experience.  Ability to make accurate observations.  Familiarity with NYS DOH regulations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Requires sitting, standing bending and reaching.  May require lifting up to 20 pounds.  Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office equipment such as computer, fax, calculators and telephone.  Requires normal hearing and vision.
