In 1938, three physicians, Dr. Charles Dickson, Dr. William Dickson and Dr. Millard Slocum, formed a practice and rented quarters at 258 Genesee Street Utica, NY. By consolidating their practices, the physicians were able to realize benefits of a physician owned multi-specialty group practice to improve the quality of medical care received by their patients.
In 1954, the Slocum-Dickson Medical Group purchased a building at 430 Court Street to accommodate their thriving practice.
By 1979, twenty-five physicians were employed by the Slocum-Dickson Medical Group. In addition to the physicians, the group employed almost one hundred staff members. At that time, 430 Court Street Associates was formed by the Slocum-Dickson physicians to facilitate the construction of a 14,817 square foot addition to the existing facility.
In 1989, 39 physicians were employed by Slocum-Dickson and approximately 150 staff members. Because of continued growth over the years, a new 78,000 square foot state of the art multi-specialty medical facility was constructed at 1729 Burrstone Road.
Today, Slocum-Dickson Medical Group P.L.L.C. employs over 60 physicians. The practice includes 25 specialties and over 400 staff members and is still growing. in 2001 we expanded “Our Roof” again. We added about 40,000 square feet in three stories and in three areas to the existing building. Our Rehabilitation Department and Rheumatology department finally moved from the former Court Street location into a new state of the art department which now includes aqua therapy and lymphedema care. It has the latest in Electronic Medical Records technology for use by all physicians and staff. We have also incorporated our Annex Building at 615 French Road into our campus. Along with this new addition, we will be adding 25 more physicians and about 150 more support staff. This will become our flagship location, the hub for 4-5 other satellite locations. We have opened Satellite offices at 55 Central Plaza in Ilion and at 91 Perimeter Road in Rome.
Slocum-Dickson is once again “raising the roof” of their New Hartford location. The group embarked on a joint venture with CMI to bring MRI capabilities to the New Hartford location. The MRI was installed in July will be available to patients by August. In order to house the new machine, Slocum-Dickson expanded the west wing of the building. Nelson Associates is responsible for the architectural design of the expansion and the construction will be done by Murnane Contractors. The contractors are in the process of building the 33,000 plus square foot addition. The entire expansion is scheduled to be complete by December 2006.
This expansion is the beginning of many changes for Slocum-Dickson’s Radiology Department. In addition to the MRI, we are adding a new 64-slice, state-of-the-art, GE CT scan unit. The new CT scan will provide our radiologists with more capabilities including CT angiography. Plans are in place to convert the Radiology Department to fully digital capabilities. In the future, we will be bringing a Sieman’s fully digital radiographic and fluoroscopic unit. To complete the department’s conversion to digital, we will be adding PACS/RIS (picture archiving & communication systems/radiology information systems). This system will allow the department to more easily manage workflow and share information with staff and referring physicians.
Sure we have grown, but what is so important to each of our patients about Slocum Dickson Medical Group that has provided for this growth? You could claim that it is due to our participation in approximately a dozen research studies. And we do this to expand the knowledge base of medicine, improve our own skills and capabilities, and to provide our patients the latest cures to illness or injury.
Or, you might say it is due to our awards from the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and have received a three year accreditation from the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) for the second consecutive time. We have also received clinical recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance/American Diabetes Association (NCQA/ADA) Diabetes Physician Recognition Program. We have been voted “Best of the Best” Medical Centers in the Utica area more than once. Our physicians have set some of the benchmarks in the nation for patient satisfaction and quality of care. Every Physician in the group is required to be Board Certified.
Yes, it is true that we offer virtually all of the ancillary testing capabilities that our patients need, along with an Urgent Care center, full service Rehabilitation services, Optical Shop and Pharmacy along with over 25 specialties of physicians under one roof.
You could say that it is due to the single medical record that allows each physician to review the detailed notes of the other physicians to bring to bear all of the best minds Slocum Dickson has to offer on your particular situation. Of course this assists all of the physicians in the Group to continue to learn more about medicine to keep them at the top of their field.
Of course, you have said that it is due to the fact that Slocum Dickson Medical Group requires all of its physicians to be Board Certified and maintain their Boards through continuous education and training and that Slocum Dickson Credentials its own physicians through a rigorous screening process.
Sure, all of these factors add to the excellence of Slocum Dickson, but we believe that it is our continuous commitment to the core mission of our group, to provide the best care we can to each patient.
Generations of care under one roof, in a tradition of patient centered, physician directed excellent care.
